Terry Barber is the “chief inspirator” for Grizzard Communications Group, which serves the nonprofit health care segment, as well as colleges and universities, in the area of philanthropic branding. He speaks every week across the country on creating an inspiring culture. He recently created a Web 2.0 initiative called Inspiration Blvd., LLC (www.inspirationblvd.com), which is capturing the attention of people interested in inspiring others and in being inspired. Terry holds a master’s degree from New Orleans Baptist Seminary. He is actively involved in supporting an orphanage in Uganda and child sponsorship and early childhood education in Guatemala.

This book took the mystery out what feels like a nebulous topic: inspiration.It was a good read. Although insightful, it felt very much like common sense organized nicely so the information could be digested easily then applied readily. Application questions further underscored the pragmatism with which it was written.
Although I initially bought this for biz purposes, it is translatable to all aspects of life. I am already using some of the principles to better parent my kids. My tweenage daughter is practicing some of the principles to better hone her soft skills.

There is a huge difference in motivating and inspiring as you will learn from Barber. Do you think you motivate your employees and family members by being strong, assertive and setting a good example? Are you passionate and compassionate about your work? Barber will tell you that you may not be cutting it! Demanding more of people because they haves potential and can do better may be driving those that you direct away. Barber makes his point from the get go that there is a huge difference in "motivation" and inspiration." People are driven by inspiration and he explains how that will help you get more from your employees and even family members. His techniques and education approach are insightful, creative, authentic; and genuinely can raise the bar for how you interact with people. It will also give people a different feel about you! He explains various leader types and allows you to select which one most appropriately fits you. How would you do if your employees gave you a personality profile review?
He explains how to adapt your leadership type to accomplish more and to bring out more of the best in the people you manage. He suggests how to connect with others dreams and aspirations. Barber teaches you to see in others abilities what they don't see in themselves. If you help people get what they want, you will not only get what you want...but much more. There are many companies that weathered the financial crisis over the past decade by retaining a staff that was fearful of making a change. With unemployment steadily declining, people are becoming more comfortable with the fact that they indeed have options. If they felt shackled during the downturn, recovering a sense of engagement is a tall order. Now that prosperity is returning, concerns about the (often clichéd) “War for Talent” are returning as the Baby Boomers’ exodus from the workforce accelerates.
