This book is fantastic. The way the stories are all weaved together is insane. The blood, the gore, and the guts I loved. A monstrously good rendition of your favourite slasher horror movies in literary form. This novel had me wondering at certain points how the author was going to tie up all the different threads he throws out over the course of the narrative, even though each one works as page-turning individual stories in their own right. But, they all do resolve themselves very satisfyingly and keep you guessing right up until the end as to who will survive and who will not. Every character is given equal weight so there is no clear hero or villain because, as the title says, this is about maniacs with knives rather than good guys vs bad guys. That being said, the author offers some very interesting takes on extreme horror tropes that makes this novel memorable and distinctive. You feel for these characters as much as you dread what they might do next or end up experiencing themselves. As for the gore? There's plenty of that. Torture? A gutload. Will you be horrified, sickened and disturbed? Count on it.
I was going to sleep early at midnight. Then I received my copy of Maniacs with Knives. Well, two hours later I reflected on what I read. If you want a story with blood and guts the book provides you with a menu of great variety. The twists and turns make it an enjoyable read. I can't wait for the sequel.
This had a lot of fun gory horror parts as promised, which is the good part. What kept it from being great for me was some poor decisions about where to shove backstory and pointless details. That stuff never belongs in the middle of the violence or sex, it takes the umph away. With smoother execution, pun intended, this could have been a whole lot more fun.
I thought it was decent. Kind of direct in some areas, as the title implies.
All I can say is WOW! I am a Gorehound in my taste and this hits every fiber of Horror. Bring on the Next one!
It was a very suspenseful and gory read and at first it was hard to follow because of the way the characters jumped around. But after you connected them it was fricking amazing. I hope to read more from this author.
4.5 stars!! Shaun Hupp is one sick dude! This was a super fun and gory read. I cringed multiple times while reading this. I love how all the seemingly separate story lines converged into one. Can't wait to read part 2!!
